Baptism

ARE YOU READY TO TAKE YOUR NEXT STEP?

What is the Meaning of Baptism?

The word "baptize" is from the Greek word meaning, "to dip or dunk under water; to immerse into water." We believe the Bible teaches that baptism is appropriate when someone - of his or her own desire - chooses to repent of their sins, place their faith in Jesus as the one who forgives our sins, and then chooses to make Jesus the Lord of their life.

According to Romans 6:1-10, baptism illustrates:

  • Jesus' death (just as Jesus died, our old sin nature dies in baptism)

  • Jesus' burial (just as Jesus was buried in the ground, we are buried under the water in baptism)

  • Jesus' resurrection (just as Jesus resurrected, we resurrect out of the water and into a new life).

“Having been buried with him in baptism and raised with him through your faith in the power of God, who raised him from the dead." - Colossians 2:12

Why Be Baptized?

1. To follow the example set by Christ

“At the time Jesus came from Nazareth and was baptized by John in the river" - Mark 1:9

2. Because Christ commanded it

"Jesus said, 'Go then, to all people everywhere and make them my disciples, baptize them in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, and then teach them to obey everything I have commanded you." - Matthew 28:19-20

3. It demonstrates obedience

"Those who accepted his message were baptized...." - Acts 2:41

"We know that we have come to know him if we obey his commands." - 1 John 2:3

4. Every time someone accepts the message about Jesus, in the book of Acts, they are baptized.

“Having been buried with him in baptism and raised with him through your faith in the power of God, who raised him from the dead." - Colossians 2:12

Does Valley View Christian Church Baptize Infants?

Valley View Christian Church does not offer infant baptism as we believe a person should be old enough to understand the personal decision he/she is making and what it means to put his/her faith in Christ before they can be baptized.

However, we do offer Baby Dedication. Baby Dedication is a great opportunity to be encouraged and equipped for your journey as a new parent, to meet other families at Valley View Christian Church who have the same Christ-centered goals, and to commit your family to the Lord with the blessing and prayers of your Church Family! Parents will attend a dedication class to educate and equip parents before signing up for an upcoming Baby Dedication Celebration. You’ll find our next Baby Dedication Class listed under Events. Register for the class and we’ll contact you with all the details.

Where Can I Go To Speak To Someone About Being Baptized?

Those who desire to get baptized can meet with a minister on staff to talk through baptism in the Next Room. The Next Room is located to the left of the Worship Center and it is open every Sunday after service. Once you’ve made this commitment, our staff will schedule your baptism on a Sunday morning. Baptisms happen during the Sunday service. If you’d like to be baptized or need more information, email questions@vvcc.org.
