James Dennis Slaughter (Denny)
Born March 31, 1937.
Passed away at his home in Carrollton, Texas July 31, 2018 at the age of 81.
Beloved husband, father, and minister, Dennis was born and raised in Attica, Indiana where he met and married his childhood sweetheart, Violet. Together they raised four children and have 12 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren with two more on the way this month. He graduated from Lincoln Christian College in 1969 and was awarded an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree from Dallas Christian College. In 1970 they moved to Dallas to minister Valley View Christian Church, which at that time was at the corner of Marsh and Valley View Lane in Farmers Branch. The church thrived under his leadership and direction for 30 years, until he had to retire due to complications from Parkinson’s disease.
Survived by his wife of 62 years and best friend Violet, sister Donna Jane Sichts of Attica, Indiana, son Steve (Andrea) Slaughter of Birmingham, Alabama, daughter Susan (James) Hutcherson of Garland, Texas, daughter Shari (Larry) Evans of Roland, Arkansas, and son Stuart (Jody) Slaughter of Dallas.
Grandchildren: J. David Slaughter, Jonathan Slaughter, Michael Slaughter, Christopher Slaughter, Heather Hutcherson, Holly Sweetman, Stefani Burchfield, Andrew Slaughter, Valorie Slaughter, Kari Evans, Kellie Dumont, and Kristi Bradford.
The family wishes to express its heartfelt gratitude to the congregations of Valley View Christian Church and Cornerstone Christian Church for their generous care, compassion, and assistance during his long illness.
